This page offers answers to questions that are being asked frequently.
When should I wear it?
| |
Should you have to travel long distances alone, on a train, working late, going out on a date with someone you don’t know too well, going to clubs, or in any situation that you might not feel comfortable or even just not sure.
Is it possible for a rapist to see if a woman is wearing RAPEX?
| |
Absolutely not! It fits behind the labia and has no strings or anything protruding.
How is RAPEX inserted and removed?
| |
It is inserted with an applicator like a tampon, and removed with the same applicator.
What is your response to the few negative responses to RAPEX? (Question to Sonet Ehlers – inventor)
| |
“As with everything in life there will be negative attitudes and I can't be responsible for people who refuse to educate men and feel the
device is medieval”. “A medieval device for a medieval deed”!
How was the device tested during its development?
| |
The scientists and engineers created both a vagina and a penis on which prototypes were tested.
Where will this “RAPEX, Anti-Rape Female Condom” be sold?
| |
Stores which stock regular condoms will in future also stock RAPEX.
Can't the device disappear into the body?
| |
Not at all. It fits into the vagina and cannot go past the cervix. Nor can it vanish into the bloodstream or anywhere else.
Does this mean I cannot have sex with my husband or partner?
| |
Yes you can, but you will not wear it when you are with your husband or partner in bed, unless you are in a violent relationship and you do get raped by your husband or partner. The choice is then yours whether to wear it or not.
Will the device cause any infections?
| |
Not if you wear a new RAPEX daily, or whenever you need to insert one.
Can it by accident hook into my own skin?
| |
Not if used according to the instructions.
Won't the rapist kill me?
| |
Sadly, many women have been killed over time, as nobody can guarantee the outcome of any rape! However, the huge plus-factor is that the discomfort and pain is such, that the rapist would be disabled temporarily, (much worse than a kick in the groin that self-defence instructors teach women!) giving you time to get away and get help.
How long can the device stay in for?
| |
Up to 24 hours.
Will it cause permanent damage to the rapist?
| |
No, not if he gets professional help without delay
Why must the responsibility shift to the woman?
| |
Simply because your body is sacred and it is your legal and moral right to be safe. Nobody can make you safe except you. You do not have to secure your home, equally you do not have to secure your body, however it is better if you do so!
Will it be available in various sizes?
| |
Yes. Small, medium and large.
From what age can this device be worn?
| |
Menstruating age, thus 11-12 years of age.
Is it easily inserted?
| |
Yes, very easily and very quickly.
Do you hate men? (Question to Sonette Ehlers – inventor)
| |
Absolutely not! I love men; however I detest the deed of rape!
Can the device drop out?
| |
No. The design is such that it cannot drop out.
Is its removal easy once penetration has taken place?
| |
Yes, there is no need for you to remove it, as it has attached itself to the penis upon initial penetration it will be removed as the penis is withdrawn.
Won't the man initially feel this?
| |
When a rapist attacks, he looses control of his senses. He will become aware of the device when it is too late.
Is it legal?
| |
Yes it is, as it is neither lethal nor fatal.
Will it protect me against STD's ?
| |
Yes, as there is no body fluid inside you from the rapist.
Is it comfortable to wear?
| |
Yes it is, like a tampon.
Any metal in the device?
| |
None at all. No metal, just plastic and latex!
Have you ever been raped? (Question to Sonnett Ehlers – inventor)
| |
No, I have not been raped, but as a blood technician I have encountered many rape victims.
What motivated you to create this device?
| |
One young victim said to me, "If only I had teeth down there!" When I looked into her eyes, she looked dead, yet she wasn't.
When did the idea occur to you?
| |
First in 1969, with my first rape victim, but nothing could be done then, as the technology was not that advanced and there were no 'smart latex products'.
Were you a nurse? (Question to Sonett Ehlers – inventor)
| |
No. I was a blood technician with SABTS.
How did you get the idea? (Question to Sonet Ehlers – inventor)
| |
From the rape-victim who first said “If only I had teeth down there”, to some time later a young man was admitted to hospital for getting his penis caught in his trouser zip and was in excruciating pain.
Will the rapist be attached or stuck to the woman?
| |
No, not at all.
Can this be worn during masturbation?
| |
No, not at all.
Will women not use this to frame men?
| |
Of course it is possible, as everything can be abused. But there will be legal consequences.
Could the device cause infertility?
| |
No, not at all.
Won't I forget the device is in?
| |
You could, but the empty applicator should remind you!
Is there a similar device for men?
| |
Not at this stage.
What about date rape?
| |
Very good question!! If you are out on a date you can either insert the device before going out, or if during the date you are uncomfortable about your date partner, excuse yourself to the bathroom and insert the device.
For the first time there is now incriminating evidence, it will no longer be your word against his!
What if I am asleep and someone enters my house and tries to rape me?
| |
Golden rule... keep the device right next to you. Remember it is very easy to insert, and very quick too.
Can't the rapist simply take a pair of scissors and cut it off?
| |
No. The latex cannot be cut easily, the hooks are embedded in the skin and it is extremely difficult to remove.
What happens if my child finds it in the waste paper basket and sticks his finger into it?
| |
Once you remove the condom with the applicator, the hooks attach themselves to the applicator stick, and the condom is effectively sealed before it is discarded. As with all potentially dangerous items, it is your responsibility to discard it properly.
What about critics like Chantel Cooper and Charlene Smith?
| |
Surely the best defence of all would be for us to stand united against the violent abuse of our women and children, therefore I find such unconstructive criticism surprising.
When will it be available?
| |
It will most likely be on the shelves in the second half of 2006.
What about the cost?
| |
At this stage it seems that it will retail for a bit more than a regular condom.
